Top places to watch live music for free in Copenhagen

Copenhagen has some great music venues and the best thing is many are completely free, here are the best ones we’ve tried out…

HVIDE LAM – Kultorvet 5, 1175 – City Centre
This is one of our favourite places in Copenhagen, a true traditional Danish bar and one of the oldest in the city. Every Friday and Saturday at 9pm a group of old guys get together and have done for years to play some swing jazz for the locals.

CAFE MANDELA – Onkel Dannys Pl. 9, 1700 – Vesterbro
Throughout the month Café Mandela have a selection of different artists but our personal favourite is Bobby Bovell & The Public Secret, by the end of the night everyone is normally up dancing, a really nice cosy and fun atmosphere. Check out the website for dates and times.

KAYAK BAR – Børskaj 12, 1221 – City Centre
With a fake beach this place is really great in the summer but also has a sauna during the winter months. We always head here during the jazz festival, but there is often live music throughout the week, check the website for dates and times. They also have some tasty food choices and if you’re feeling active you can hire a Kayak, 250dk for 1 hour.

TIRE-BOUCHON – Teglgårdstræde 5, 1452 – City Centre
When entering this place you instantly feel like someone has stolen a piece of Paris and placed it in the heart of Copenhagen. Very French and very cosy. Every Thursday from 7pm you can listen to Gypsy Jazz whilst drinking a bottle of red. They’re also famous for selling Absinthe if you want something a little stronger!

CAFE RETRO – Knabrostræde 26, 1210 – City Centre
This non-profit cosy cafe is a great place to listen to some live music. It has quite a retro feel with miss-mash furniture and has a monthly art exhibition. Check out the calendar on the website for dates and times and over events such as knitting clubs and language lessons!

CHRISTIANIA – Fabriksområdet 52, 1440 – Christiania
In the summer Nemoland in the heart of Christiania has free concerts on Saturdays and Sundays, this is a really chilled place to watch an outdoor concert. Also on a Sunday evening there is a bar on the right hand side as you go through the main Christiania entrance which is perfect for an intimate gig, but note it does get pretty smokey in there!
